Dr. Demond Simmons began his fire service career in 1997 as a firefighter with the Burlingame (CA) Fire Department. In 1999, he was part of the first firefighter-paramedic recruit class with the Oakland (CA) Fire Department. During his tenure with the Oakland Fire Department, he has served as a firefighter, firefighter-paramedic, engineer, lieutenant, captain, battalion chief and an adjunct instructor for the department's recruit academy. He is currently assigned to Fire Administration serving as a deputy chief.
IFSTA publishes 25 textbooks that support the FESHE model curriculum. Robust student and instructor support products are also available including eBooks and apps to ensure student success. These texts incorporate state of the art teaching and learning methods from the layout of the text to the complete curriculums that are available at no cost to instructors. The Fire and Emergency Services Higher Education (FESHE) initiative is a project of the U.S. Fire Administration. FESHE provides model course outlines for fire related and EMS management courses in two and four year academic degree programs.

Dr. Ernest Grant to be honored with the Award at the 31st Annual National Fire and Emergency Services Dinner in Washington, DC, April 25, 2019.
The Congressional Fire Services Institute (CFSI) and the International Fire Service Training Association at Fire Protection Publications, Oklahoma State University (IFSTA/FPP/OSU) are pleased to announce that Dr. Ernest Grant has been selected as the recipient of the 2019 Dr. Anne W. Phillips Award for Leadership in Fire Safety Education. Dr. Grant was the Outreach Nurse Clinician, North Carolina Jaycee Burn Center (retired) responsible for burn prevention. He is the Past Chair of the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Board of Directors, and the current elected President of the American Nurses Association.
Every year since 1981, IFSTA has published a Fire Service Calendar featuring unique fire service related images from around the world. Professional and amateur photographers submit photographs for consideration to be included in the IFSTA calendar.

Warrenton, VA (July 31, 2018) Essentials of Community Risk Reduction is a new, free, online course where fire fighters and officers can learn the basics of Community Risk Reduction that they can use on the job every day. This self-paced course, developed through a partnership between The Vision 20/20 Project and IFSTA ResourceOne, helps fire fighters gain a better understanding of the importance of Community Risk Reduction to the fire service and to the community.
The United States Fire Administration has released the updated edition of the Safety and Health Considerations for the Design of Fire and Emergency Medical Services Stations. The report was produced under a cooperative research agreement with IFSTA, who is headquartered at Fire Protection Publications at Oklahoma State University. The principal investigator/writer of the report was Robert Tutterow, of the F.I.E.R.O organization in Charlotte, North Carolina. He is also the retired Safety Officer from the Charlotte Fire Department. He is one of the foremost experts on this topic.
This report provides a large amount of information on all aspects of health and safety issues that should be considered when designing or retrofitting fire and EMS stations. It is based on the latest research in reducing the risk of occupational illnesses and injuries, including cancer.
Sunday May 20, 2018 marks the beginning of National EMS Week and presents an opportunity to honor the men and women who deliver pre-hospital 9-1-1 emergency medical care throughout the United States. This vital public safety service is provided primarily by cross-trained, multi-role emergency responders who are based in our nation’s fire departments.
