Chief Keith Bryant, Oklahoma State Fire Marshal, was awarded the Everett E. Hudiburg Memorial Award during the International Fire Service Training Association’s 88th Annual Validation Conference in July 2021.

Chief Bryant joined the Oklahoma City Fire Department in 1982 after serving as a U.S. Army firefighter/crash rescue specialist for four years. He also served as a firefighter for a short time with the Edmond (OK) Fire Department. He promoted through the ranks of the OCFD, serving in many critical roles along the way. These positions included district/battalion chief, chief training officer, battalion chief of operations and deputy chief of operations. Chief Bryant was appointed fire chief of the OCFD in 2005.

The Emergency Services Ergonomics and Wellness report by Principal Investigator Dr. Cerie Smith, Director of Rehabilitation & Wellness, Phoenix Fire Department, Phoenix, Arizona, is now available for download. The report was produced through a partnership with the United State Fire Administration and IFSTA, headquartered at Fire Protection Publications at Oklahoma State University, Stillwater, Oklahoma.

This report provides corrective measures to increase the safety of emergency responders during training and responses; reducing job injuries and maximizing length of service.

Safety posters promoting health and wellness are also available for download and use.

Fire Service Affiliation

As the former senior career federal fire official, Dr. Denis Onieal was responsible for the day-to-day operation of the United States Fire Administration (USFA) — the annual training of over 140,000 first responders at and through the National Fire Academy; the National Fire Incident Reporting System, which documents and analyzes 28 million fire department emergency responses a year; the USFA’s fire prevention, public information and public education programs; and the 26 campus buildings and the grounds of the historic National Emergency Training Center in Emmitsburg, Maryland.

An honorably discharged Army veteran, he joined the Jersey City Fire Department and rose through the ranks from firefighter to deputy chief, and then to acting chief, leading a uniformed force of 650 firefighters and officers. He spent his entire time "in the street" as a line fire officer.

IFSTA and Fire Protection Publications are sad to report the passing of Chief John W. Hoglund, Director Emeritus of the Maryland Fire and Rescue Institute. John served the IFSTA organization for more than 40 years as a Validation Committee Member and Chair, as well as more than 30 years as a member of the IFSTA Executive Board. He was a true leader of the fire service at all levels and will be sorely missed. Service details are as follows:
