The International Fire Service Journal of Leadership and Management (IFSJLM), is pleased to announce that Dr. David A. Greene received the IFSJLM Annual Research Symposium OSU Student Presentation Prize. Dr. Greene was recognized in Tulsa, Oklahoma at the annual IFSJLM Research Symposium. During the opening session, Dr. David A. Greene received the Prize and presented a paper on the findings of his recent dissertation research.

Dr. Greene’s presentation, “Assessing Member Satisfaction within the Volunteer Fire Service in South Carolina” was well received and generated many questions from the Symposium participants. This is a brief description of his paper:

This presentation examines satisfaction levels among volunteer firefighters and is based on a study to determine what motives exist to join the volunteer fire service, how these motives alter and map expectations for continued service, and how well volunteer departments are meeting these expectations. The study offers recommendations that fire service leaders can use to improve volunteer recruitment and retention.

Dr. Greene has over 25 years of experience in the fire service and is currently the Deputy Chief with Colleton County (SC) Fire-Rescue. He holds a Ph.D. in Fire and Emergency Management Administration from Oklahoma State University, a Master of Business Administration Degree from the University of South Carolina, a Bachelor of Science Degree from the College of Charleston, and an Associate’s Degree in Fire Science from Pikes Peak Community College.

Dr. Greene serves on the editorial board and is a regular contributor to the Carolina Fire Rescue EMS Journal. He is a certified National Fire Academy Executive Fire Officer and holds the Chief Fire Officer Designation from the Center for Public Safety Excellence among other national and international memberships, licensures, and certifications.

The Prize is made possible by a gift to the Oklahoma State University Foundation by Dr. John Granito and his daughter Michele Conners. The Prize allows an Oklahoma State University student in the Fire Protection and Safety Engineering Technology undergraduate program or the Political Science Fire and Emergency Management Administration graduate programs (MS or Ph.D.) to attend the Research Symposium held annually in July in Oklahoma. The student selected receives a cash prize, lodging at the symposium hotel, and the opportunity to present a paper on a topic related to fire leadership and management as part of the Research Symposium.

IFSJLM delivers the Annual Research Symposium on the Saturday prior to the opening session of the International Fire Service Training Association (IFSTA) Validation Conference. The IFSJLM, the research symposium and the IFSTA Validation Conference are sponsored by Fire Protection Publications (FPP), the world’s leading publisher of fire-related training and educational materials located at Oklahoma State University.

The Research Symposium 2017 will be held Saturday, July 8, 2017. For more information about past or future Research Symposia, please contact Dr. Robert E. England, Founding Editor, International Fire Service Journal of Leadership and Management at bob.england@okstate.edu.
