Elizabeth Hendel

Fire Department

Elizabeth Hendel is a Deputy Fire Chief with the City of Phoenix Fire Department, Phoenix, Arizona with almost 37 years of service. She has her Bachelor’s Degree in Public Safety Administration graduating Summa Cum Lade, and a Master’s Degree in Leadership with Emphasis in Disaster Preparedness and Crisis Management. In addition, she has her AAAE Airport Master Firefighter Certification, Elizabeth is a certified NFPA Instructor, Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), Terrorist Liaison Officer, Southwest Region Wildland Logistics Chief, and Aircraft Rescue Firefighter Certified.

Elizabeth is an adjunct instructor at Embry Riddle Aeronautical University instructing in the Emergency Services Department where she teaches courses on Leadership/Management, Firefighting, and terrorism to name a few. She has been a guest instructor at TEEX and has served as a facilitator for the Incident Command Symposiums and presented at various conferences Nationally and Internationally. In addition, Elizabeth has served on two panels for the National Academy of Science in Washington D.C. in the Aviation and Fire Services industry. She works part time for Beacon Occupational Services in Alaska instructing ARFF in the summer months'. Elizabeth has been a member of the ARFFWG since 1995 and currently serves as the Section 7 Manager and is the current Chairperson (2018-19).

Chief Hendel has previously served on the IFSTA validation committee for the Aircraft Rescue Fire Fighting manual and was one of two individuals for the test validation of this book. She also served recently on Chief Officer committee. She has had the honor of serving on the IFSTA Executive Board since 2017.

Elizabeth is a board member and section representative for the Aircraft Rescue Fire Fighting Working Group (ARFFWG) and currently the Chairwoman of this International Organization. She is also a member of the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Aircraft Rescue Fire Fighting Technical Committee, and has her Airport Master Firefighter designation through the American Association of Airport Executives (AAAE).

Elizabeth has two adult daughters and one Grandson. She loves hockey, enjoys hiking, mountain bike riding, water sport, and travel. She is number 8 of 9 children and spends a lot of time with family and friends.
